Camberwell House

Nestled amongst the leafy streets of Camberwell, this compact Victorian terrace is home to a family who had outgrown the original building.

The brief was to design a double storey extension that retained the character of the original house at the front and introduced natural, sustainable materials creating a warm, inviting family home.

The site required a clever design that increased internal living spaces whilst maintaining the existing ground floor footprint, allowing the size of the garden to not be compromised. This also enabled a sustainable outcome as the original concrete slab was retained.

The first-floor master bedroom features a large window with a bespoke external timber screen that is angled to allow light into the room, whilst retaining privacy and avoiding overlooking into the surrounding gardens.

Our aim was to maintain the character of the original home, ensuring the extension embraced this instead of feeling like a modern ‘add on’. Recycled brick internal feature walls and locally sourced Black Butt timber cladding are used internally and externally to add warmth and texture to the home.

“ When the renovation was complete and during the build, the structure, design, use of angles and views completely surprised us, and we just love how all the different materials blend together to create a warm and inviting home. The renovation has improved the way we live and work.”
